What fun. In October 2022, I decided to explore going back to work. Whole Foods welcomed me warmly. I had a laundry list of conditions that had to be just right for me to do that. I had lots of requirements about what I did not want and what would work for me. My “job” interview centered on me telling my soon to be “boss” what those things were.
- I was looking for an outlet to be with people and interact with them. Intergenerational and younger would be appealing to me.
- I did not want to work that many hours. Maybe 10 hours a week.
- wanted to be able to walk to work. However, it gets dark early in Maine in the winter. I didn’t want to walk to or from work in the dark. They are less than a quarter of a mile from where I live.
- I wanted to have direct contact with customers but I had a lot of parameters connected with that. I would not be a cashier, bagger, or deli, bakery, meat or seafood counter clerk.
- I wanted to be in a fun department and learn things about healthy foods. I wanted a chance to learn some new things and a chance to be creative – floral would be a good fit too.
- I wanted him to start me off at the highest hourly wage that he could.
The only ask he had of me was would I be willing to work one of the weekend days – he really needed that. I said yes, I would work on Sunday. He suggested a schedule of two 5 hour days 10-3:00 pm on Sunday and Monday. That way the rest of my week would be free for me to pursue my other “purpose” work. And, I would not have to walk either way in the dark.
I get a 20% discount at any Whole Foods across the globe and would be eligible to enroll in their 401K plan. Which, by the way, I haven’t done yet. My paycheck is modest so I am not so keen in saving for my “retirement”. Nice to have a little extra cash to be frivolous with.
I have rejoined the workforce to have a new social outlet and help deal with loneliness. And, the opportunity to be really helpful to customers. My age is actually a positive for their customer service visions. It’s a win-win for both of us.
